Greetings for Term 4!
I trust the holiday break has sufficiently recharged your batteries for the rest of the year. I know it will be busy.
Sydney North ALEA executive has two exciting opportunities for you. Register now for a literacy presentation by Sydney University’s Peter Freebody. Start writing a book review to win $250 towards registration at the 2012 ALEA National Conference to be held in Sydney.
1. Professor Peter Freebody practises what he preaches!
Professor Peter Freebody is in constant demand within and beyond Australia as a literacy expert. As major author of the Australian English Curriculum Shape Paper, Peter passionately advocates ample professional development to accompany its implementation. Recognising the link between professional understanding and confidence, he has agreed to address Sydney North ALEA members on Saturday 29 October 2011.
According to Peter, it is a myth that literacy education is mostly complete by Stage 2. The early years are foundational, but educators in the Middle Years also provide essential support to students facing increasingly demanding literacy challenges. Peter will provide us with practical strategies to support students’ literacy as they move from primary to secondary school.
Too often literacy difficulties are mistaken for poor academic aptitude or understanding. “Literacy is a …self-growing set of skills in societies such as ours: rich literacy begets richer literacy”, he says.
Don’t miss what I expect will be the most significant session of the year for Literacy Educators. Further information and the registration form are attached.
2. Are you wondering who can help fund your attendance at the 2012 ALEA National Conference?
We can! Sydney North has set aside funds to subsidise the registration for 10 members. $250 each will be awarded to 10 members who enter our Book Review competition by writing about a book that you would like to share with members. It can be an “oldie” or a recent read. The review can be long or short.
It’s time to start writing now to share your ideas. Please let me know by replying to this email if you are planning to enter. And yes, you can enter as many times as you like!
I am looking forward to seeing you on Saturday 29 October.
